Sangmyung University has now joined this trend, introducing its own Credit Carryover System starting in the second semester of 2026. However, how many Sangmyung University students are actually aware of this newly introduced policy? As the system can directly affect course registration and academic planning, its introduction raises an important question: how well do students understand and make use of this new opportunity? How Does the Credit Carryover System Work? The Credit Carryover System is designed to give students more flexibility when planning their courses. Under the system, students who do not use all of the credits available to them in one semester may be allowed to carry a limited number of unused credits into the following semester. What Can Sangmyung University Learn from Other Universities? Sangmyung University is not the first university to introduce a credit carryover system. In this context, Sangmyung University has prepared an English education program for elementary school students in cooperation with Jongno-gu. Through the “2026 Summer English Camp,” students have the opportunity to communicate with native English-speaking instructors and participate in various activities. Now in its 17th year, the camp is meaningful as an example of long-term cooperation between the university and the local community through education. The camp was organized to help elementary school students become more familiar with English during their summer vacation and use the language in real communication situations. Rather than simply learning English in a classroom, students can naturally use the language while participating in various activities. Through these experiences, students can develop greater interest in English and gain experience communicating with others in a new environment. Classes run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are open to first- through sixth-grade elementary school students who live in Jongno-gu or attend a school in the district, with a total of 105 students selected to participate. After taking a level test, the students are divided into seven classes, with a native English-speaking instructor and a Korean assistant instructor assigned to each class to provide lessons according to the students’ English levels. The tuition fee is 400,000 won for regular participants, 300,000 won for families with a third or later child, and free for students from low-income families. Lunch and snacks are also provided, along with a shuttle bus service for participants. The classes are organized according to the students’ English levels so that each student can receive instruction appropriate to their abilities. Native English-speaking instructors provide an environment where students can directly use English, while Korean assistant instructors support students throughout the lessons. Through this class structure, students can naturally participate in listening and speaking activities in English. The camp offers not only textbook-based English lessons but also play-based programs, including English missions and experiential activities based on various themes. Through these activities, students can use English naturally while developing their expressive and communication skills. They can also reduce their anxiety about using English through direct communication with native English-speaking instructors and gain experience expressing their thoughts confidently in a new environment. Opening Ceremony and Orientation On July 25, an opening ceremony and orientation were held at the Art Center on Sangmyung University’s Seoul Campus. Kim Chong-hee, president of Sangmyung University, Yoo Chan-jong, head of Jongno-gu, and other officials attended the event and encouraged the participating students. Information about the camp’s operation and programs was provided during the opening ceremony, along with messages of encouragement to help students actively participate in the camp. Guided by the clear slogan, “Find the Major That Fits You!”, the expo helped students explore their future academic paths. The event was created to help not only freshmen choosing majors, but also students considering double or minor majors. In particular, the expo was highly important for freshmen in the Division of Undeclared Majors, which was introduced last year. These freshmen need to choose their majors by the end of their first semester. Because of this, the expo helped them learn more about different majors and plan their futures. Customized Major Exploration a freshman getting advice about majors at a department booth The expo offered various programs for students with different interests, perfectly reflecting the slogan. At the booths representing each department and major, students received e-books containing core academic information, which helped them better understand different majors and courses. Students could also ask questions and receive advice from senior students. A particularly impressive feature of this year’s expo was the "Integrated Major Promotion Zone." Moving beyond a simple display of text - based information, this zone featured major introduction videos directly produced by the students themselves, Many students responded positively to this program. Career and Campus Support In addition to academic major selection, the event also offered various programs to help students prepare for their future careers. Organized by the university student council, the "2026-1 SMCL (SangMyung Champions League)" officially kicked off its spring season on March 30. This year's tournament brings together eight distinct teams—Canon, Saboom, Triple S, NS, HIEMU, IEMU, Yeok-Con FC, and FC Core—all vying for the campus championship. As the opening matches underway, the league is already drawing significant attention from the student body, setting the stage for a memorable season of campus sports. Fierce Competition: Group Stage Results and Standings he tournament began with an intense group stage, dividing the eight teams into two leagues to compete for a spot in the tournament bracket. In the 'Sang League,' Canon dominated the field, securing the top spot with 9 points, an impressive goal difference of 10, and a total of 13 goals. The university’s overseas volunteer team will carry out its summer volunteer program in Ulaanbaatar from June 23 to July 4. Students from both the Seoul and Cheonan campuses will participate together, offering educational, health, and cultural exchange programs for local elementary school students. This program goes beyond simple volunteer work. It is designed as an integrated international service project in which students communicate with the local community through lessons and hands-on activities that they have planned themselves. The volunteers are preparing a wide range of programs, including Korean language lessons, hygiene and health education, traditional games, and cultural activities. Through these efforts, they hope to provide local children with valuable learning experiences and meaningful cultural exchange opportunities. This marks the Center’s 12th selection since it was first chosen in 2013, setting a new record for the highest number of selections among participating universities. Through this project, the Center will continue its efforts to enhance students’ understanding of international development cooperation and foster global competencies in line with Korea’s expanding role in official development assistance (ODA). Established in 1991, KOICA serves as the Republic of Korea as the leading development cooperation agency. It collaborates with a wide range of domestic and international partners, including government ministries, public institutions, civil society organizations, businesses, and academic institutions to implement sustainable development initiatives. The agency provides bilateral and multilateral ODA to developing countries, supports non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and carries out projects aimed at promoting peacebuilding and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The International Cooperation activities of example, Laos field activities From Laos field activities to micro-major operations, the center has consistently refined its practical talent development model that combines theory and practice.
